Sponsored by United Way of the Ozarks, Day of Caring is the single largest one-day, community-wide volunteer event in Southwest Missouri. Local businesses and organizations take part by coordinating teams of employees to spend a day giving back to area non-profit agencies.
Springfield Mayor Ken McClure noted the strong economy in Springfield, recognized public servants and announced plans for community-wide planning and land use at the annual State of the City Address held recently during the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s Good Morning Springfield! program at Evangel University.
Community leaders from across many sectors in Springfield came together during a 15-month process to assess the needs, challenges and opportunities surrounding mental health and substance abuse in our community. Along the way, a difficult reality emerged—Greene County’s suicide and depression rates were higher than state or national averages. We have fewer inpatient beds than national standards.
